How cool is this? Gorgeous KSDK reporter P.J. Randhawa dropped by the Sisters in Crime tent for a chat and to buy a copy of Jack the Ripper in St. Louis–and to have her picture taken with Fedora.

Holiday Gala

Hi sisters and misters!  Time to deck the halls and make merry at our Members Only holiday party.

Mary Lou Merkel has most graciously offered her home once again. Mary Lou’s decorations are so beguiling that you can’t help finding your own inner Christmas spirit. This is a time when we can relax, unwind and share our Works in Progress along with lots of good cheer, nifty presents, games and holiday goodies–a time for us to get to know each other. We’ll celebrate on our regular meeting night, Wednesday December 16, from 6:30. Bring a contribution to our pot luck and a wrapped book for our mystery swap. We’re seeking wine and any festive goodies that say ‘Tis the season. Wives, husbands or pals are welcome, too, so don’t hesitate to bring a guest.

NOVEMBER 18, 2015 – Scenes that Leave You Panting for More.

7-9 p.m. Come to the small meeting room at Mid County Library 7821 Maryland Avenue in Clayton, Mo 63105  314-994-3300

In our quest to get acquainted with librarians throughout the area, we will invade Clayton for our November meeting–and drop by one of the swell watering holes nearby afterwards for a little jovial networking as members share the best of the best. To celebrate their 70th anniversary, Mystery Writers of America is compiling a list of the 100 greatest mysteries of all time. St. Louis SinC wants to delve even deeper. I call to all mystery readers and writers–bring in a favorite scene–two pages maximum–to read at our November meeting. What does it take to create unforgettable scenes?  Is it humor, drama, suspense, snappy dialogue, spot-on word choice, sentences that spin pure gold? Let’s discover together what makes a scene something to shout about.

And here’s a very special eye-opener. Who wrote the first American detective novel? Betcha don’t know. Betcha didn’t know this 1878 book was the first true American best-seller. Betcha didn’t know Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a devotee of this writer. Betcha think it was a man.Find out by clicking this link…MAKE MINE MYSTERY …and bring a scene from any mystery to our November meeting for a chance to win a Make Mine Mystery T-shirt.Here’s another poser. Can you name the book and the author of the 1934 noir classic suggested by this picture?  (Answer: The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain.)

MAY 20, 2015 “THE SHANNON FILES”

(A FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF SELECTED ST. LOUIS CRIME STORIES)

7-9 p.m. at Sachs County Library, 16400 Burkhardt Place (just off Chesterfield Parkway West, south of I-64)

Private investigator, retired Marine and ex-cop, Ray Mileur informs, inspires and entertains with his first-hand accounts of selected St. Louis crime stories.  Many characters in his Mike Shannon series are drawn from his own case files. Prior to writing his first novel, Ray was a free-lance sports writer covering the St. Louis Cardinals. After founding a website which attracted over 10 million visitors, he became affiliated with Scout.com and Fox Sports. The crowning moment of his sports writing career came in 2008, with an invitation from former St. Louis Cardinals’ manager, Billy Southworth’s family, to represent the manager and his family at the National Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York.

Ray is currently working contract security with the Federal Protection Service and Department of Homeland Security.  In his spare time, he is still a free-lance sports writer.

“If you like action, if you like tough detectives fighting their way out of tough situations, you’re going to love Mike Shannon and the Gateway to Hell”  – Pacific Book Review

Mike Shannon is used to taking on the hard cases.  He’s a private investigator and ex-cop in St. Louis, and when the authorities throw up their hands, Shannon is there to bring the guilty to justice.  But doing what’s right doesn’t mean keeping your hands clean: he’s stacked up quite a body count over the years – something that he’s not proud of – and it’s beginning to take its toll on him.

Shannon’s investigation of a possible runaway is shaping into one hell of a case against police corruption and drug trafficking.  As Shannon digs deeper, the danger escalates when he comes face to face with a dark figure from his past, a rogue CIA hit-man, known as the Sandman.  Shannon might be in over his head, but that’s never stopped him before.  In all the confusion, Shannon is sure of one thing, he’s not done killing yet.

7-9 p.m. at Sachs County Library, 1640 Burkhardt Place (just off Chesterfield Parkway West, south of I-64)

If agents and editors don’t seem to warm up to your characters, it’s time to add that human touch. Award winning romantic suspense author Claudia Shelton will help you learn how to develop your characters through their unwritten back story. Hear how you can discover their secrets, flaws, hopes and desires which make them all the more exciting. And romance? Adding a little romance might be just the spice that’s missing in your story.
